Made from chana dal, sattu is a rich source of protein and is often referred to as poor man’s protein. Sattu health benefits: Sattu is prepared with roasted black chana, some lemon juice and cumin powder. This delicious summer coolant is naturally rich in protein and is also good for diabetics. How much of it should you be consuming though? “The best time to consume sattu is during the daytime, Sattu is a high-energy, very nutritious food and this dish has very little fat. Apart from energizing carbohydrates, sattu is also a high-protein food, with iron, calcium and vitamins. “Sattu contains proteins minerals like calcium, iron and magnesium — all which are essential in tissue repair after a workout. It also has complex carbohydrates which are needed to provide energy,” says Lohia. Anything roasted and ground into a fine powder is called sattu. For example, horse gram or chana when grounded without being roasted is besan, but once roasted and powdered, it becomes sattu. Similarly sattu can be made by roasting and powdering maize, barley (jau) and it can also be a mix of all these grains.
